Structural Health Monitoring (Infrastructure)
Structural Health Monitoring is a vital tool for engineers to assess the integrity of critical structures. It combines a variety of sensing technologies to capture, log and analyse real-time data.
Working with Endurance Consulting in Sydney, CPE can supply consulting services, equipment or complete turnkey packages including project management. Applications include :
- Bulk Handling Equipment
- Wind turbines
CPE provides monitoring equipment in a variety of formats:
- Portable Systems - these are suitable for technicians in the field. They are generally battery powered with wireless communication to laptops.
- Semi-Permanent - these are fitted to a structure and left to collect data before a technician returns to download the data.
- Fixed Systems - these are permanantly fitted and continuously monitor the structure. The data is logged internally and downloaded when required. These systems can have a real-time facility where the data can be accessed from a central location, such as a control room, at any time via wireless communications.
CPE has developed the most leading edge technology for the monitoring of ships in real-time. This was first deployed for two Australian Navy ships and after further substantial R&D it is now being deployed on the Protector class ships for the New Zealand Navy. This project has been conducted in association with Endurance Consulting out of Sydney. Key features of this system are:
- Integrates with existing NMEA 0183 data bus and Machinery Control Systems
- Provides Global Stresses, Fatigue Analysis, Bow Slams and Accelerations from Strain Gauges and Accelerometers fitted to key positions on the Hull
- Uses innovative User Interface to provide 3D Representation of the Data
- Analyses actual ship motion against predicted motion to give assessment of Sea State
- Provides assessment of Motion Sick Index (MSI)
- Provides guidance to the Officer of the Watch on safe operation of the vessel for various activities such as Transit, Helo Operations, Boat Operations
- Records Data continuously for off line analysis, including high speed alarm files
- Allows individual operational limits to be established for different activities and warns the Officer of the Watch when approaching or exceeding these limits
- Can be accessed remotely if Radio Network Connection is available
Environmental monitoring is growing exponentially in importance as the world becomes aware of the changes that are happening. CPE has formed an alliance with HydroTerra to provide equipment, expertise and system integration in this area. Some of the applications for these systems are:

As part of the growing awareness in the environment Solar is being more and more used as an alternative to fossil fuels for generating energy.
One of the more interesting, and viable, applications is the recent one where CPE has been engaged by Solarkilns to further develop their technology for commercialisation. This application involves using the Sun's energy to remove moisture from freshly cut wood. Because this can be done where the wood is cut, it provides enormous benefit in minimising transport costs as much of the moisture has been removed.
This technology is now being applied to other drying applications in food, ceramics, bricks and organic waste drying.
The infrastructure associated with power generation and distribution is becoming more and more critcal. Two opposing factors are at work here. More is being demanded of the existing infrastructure and the reliability of power supply is escalating. As well as this, there are significant cost pressures on generators and distributors. This makes assessment of the condition of the equipment paramount.
There are two aspects to this - one is to maintain the condition of the equipment and the other is to optimise the use of it.
While SCADA systems provide most of the backbone for this data collection and analysis, it requires specific industry knowledge to determine actual condition. This is where CPE can help with the experts and the ability to design equipment and software for measuring and analysing specific signals.
An enormous amount of data is now being transported by the telecommunication companies, so the infrastructure that provides this capability has to be ultra reliable. This makes monitoring of the equipment mandatory.
While systems exist for this, CPE can provide custom designs to fulfill those applications where off-the-shelf monitoring solutions do not cut it.
Where batteries are used for standby power, such as UPSs, factory automation and standby motor generators, it is critical that the condition of the batteries is known. This is traditionally a difficult area to analyse, especially when there is a large number of cells in the string. The string will fail if even one cell is faulty.
CPE has the technology for this. It not only monitors the batteries, but provides a way of balancing the individual cells with a battery bank.
Generator sets provide a special challenge for monitoring as they are very mobile. Some of the sorts of things that need to be monitored are:
- Voltage, Current, Power factor
- Fuel flow and tank level
- Engine temperature, oil pressure
- Location (GPS)
- Unauthorised access
Collection of this data can provide a significant challenge. Often these GenSets are remotely located and not close to any physical or wireless data connection - they could be in outback Australia. So various mechanisms are needed for collection of this data.
Condition monitoring helps organisations stop unscheduled outages, optimise machine performance, and reduce repair time and maintenance costs. It usually consists of measuring a number of parameters in a system, such as strain and vibration, and analysing this data in terms of rotational frequency and mechanical models to give an indication of the health of the machine under test. It is widely used in heavy industry, oil and gas, mining and energy.
Through our alliance with Frank Schrever from Machine Safety by Design, CPE is able to provide expertise and equipment in monitoring machine condition, primarily from a safety perspective. With the ever increasing liability on employers for the safety of their staff, they need to be more and more aware of the safety of their equipment.

CPE has provided a number of systems for monitoring Aerospace equipment in the past. These have been ground systems for life testing of aero-structures. As an example, one of these systems was designed and built to test the tail section of a P3, it provided:
- 550 Channels of Strain Gauge Signal Processing
- Fully Current or Voltage excitation
- 1/3uV resolution
- 2 bits noise
- Simultaneous Sampling (2uSec)
- Identification for Individual strain gauges
- 50 programmable analogue inputs
- Two Kilowatt 24VDC regulated power supply
- This much power was needed because of the high number of strain gauges
